TEHRAN, Dec. 31 (MNA) -- Mohammad Musavi Bojnurdi, a member of the Central Council of the Association of Combatant Clerics (ACC), said here on Friday that the Islamic Iran Participation Party (IIPP) would support former Majlis speaker Mahdi Karrubi if the reformists reach a consensus on his candidacy in the next presidential election.
Some IIPP officials have stated that although they have selected former science minister Mostafa Moein as their candidate, that does not mean they will stand by their choice if the reformists reach a consensus on another candidate, Bojnurdi told the Fars News Agency.
He stressed that splitting their vote among several candidates would be detrimental to the Second of Khordad Front, adding that all reformist groups should agree on a single candidate in order to win the election.
Bojnurdi added that Karrubi has not yet made a final decision on whether or not to accept the nomination.
Meanwhile, members of the Supreme Council of the Solidarity Party (SP) have reached a final decision to support Karrubi as their presidential candidate, a party member announced.
If Karrubi refuses to run for the post, the party will field its secretary general, Ebrahim Asgharzadeh, as a candidate, the SP member said on condition of anonymity.
MP Ismail Tatari also voiced support for Karrubi, saying that he would not run for president if Karrubi accepted the nomination.
“I believe Karrubi is a proficient and intelligent figure and can play a very useful and effective role at this sensitive juncture,” he told the Mehr News Agency.
The MP said that Moein is another competent nominee whose participation in the election would increase enthusiasm among potential voters."
